Cube Test Statistics Calculator — IS 456 Table 11 Significance

Why IS 456 Table 11 (Amd 4) gives three criteria at once, and how statistical thinking protects against the failure mode that killed a lot of 1990s frames.

Why this calc exists

IS 456 Table 11 (introduced in Amendment 4, 1997) was the response to the failure mode where individual cube results looked fine but the actual structure was below-grade concrete. The amendment added a 'mean of 4 non-overlapping consecutive results' criterion on top of the existing 'no individual result below fck − 3 N/mm²' (now − 4 N/mm² post-Amd 4).

Both criteria must be satisfied simultaneously. Meeting only the individual criterion means the structure has isolated weak batches that pass test-by-test but signal systemic under-strength. Meeting only the mean criterion means the average is fine but a specific pour could be a wreck. Worked: M30 mix, 4 cube results = 33, 36, 35, 32 N/mm²

Mean of 4: (33 + 36 + 35 + 32) / 4 = 34 N/mm².

Required mean ≥ fck + 4: 30 + 4 = 34 → exactly meets. ✓

Individual ≥ fck − 4: 30 − 4 = 26. Min result = 32 ≥ 26. ✓

Status: PASS on both criteria. The mix is acceptable.

Now swap 32 for 25: mean = 32.25 (still meets), but individual 25 < 26 → FAIL on individual.

Now have 30, 33, 35, 36: mean = 33.5 (fails 34 requirement), all individual pass → FAIL on mean.

Field notes (what trips people up)

  • Four non-overlapping consecutive results. Not any four results — they must be consecutive and non-overlapping. Mix up the order and you can artificially 'select' four good results to disguise a trend.
  • Small-pour rule. For pours ≤ 5 m³, fewer than 4 cubes may be tested. Table 11 footnote allows this with different acceptance criteria.
  • fck is characteristic, not target. Design at fck + 1.65σ. The +4 N/mm² margin in the mean-of-4 criterion is the IS-code's margin against a single σ below target.
  • Cube vs cylinder. IS 456 uses cube strength. If you have cylinder results (150 × 300 mm), multiply by 1.25 to get equivalent cube strength (rough; depends on aggregate and w/c).

Worked example

Site: 5,000 m³ M30 pour across 6 months. 250 cubes tested.

Analysis: mean strength 36.2 N/mm² (CoV 11 %), all individuals ≥ 26, mean-of-4 always ≥ 34.

Conclusion: excellent compliance. CoV 11 % is on the high side of nominal (typical 8–12 %); check aggregate grading and mixer uniformity if CoV stays > 13 %.

FAQ

How many cubes per pour?

IS 456 Cl 15.2.2: 1 sample = 6 cubes (3 for 7-day, 3 for 28-day) per 5 m³ to 150 m³ depending on pour size. The sampling planner calculator gives the exact rate.

What if a cube fails?

Step 1: verify the test itself (cube mould, capping, machine calibration). Step 2: review batching records for that pour. Step 3: if both clear, core-test the actual structure per IS 516 Part 5. Can I use 7-day strength to project 28-day?

Empirically 7-day strength ≈ 65–70 % of 28-day for OPC; 50–60 % for PPC. The IS-code acceptance is on 28-day strength, but site practice uses 7-day as an early-warning: if 7-day is below 65 % of 30 N/mm² (= 19.5), investigate immediately.
