Brass & Indian Units Converter — Significance & Field Notes

Why Indian sites quote in brass, the area-versus-volume trap behind many a billing query, and the exact arithmetic that keeps the site and the billing desk on the same page.

Why this calc exists

Ask two people on an Indian site what a brass is and you can get two different answers — both correct, for their trade. Plastering, painting and flooring count a brass as 100 sq ft of area. Earthwork excavation, filling and concrete count it as 100 cft of volume. The word is identical; the quantity differs by a factor of depth. That ambiguity is quiet on the work front and loud in the billing office.

What brass actually is (with provenance)

Brass is informal site language, not a statutory unit. It has no definition in any Indian Standard, and it does not appear among the units recognised under the legal metrology rules that govern trade measurement. What the conversion does rest on are exact definitions:

  • 1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly — hence 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m² and 1 cft = 0.028316846592 m³, both exact.
  • Area sense: 1 brass = 100 sq ft = 9.290304 m² (≈ 11.1111 sq yd; 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft exactly).
  • Volume sense: 1 brass = 100 cft = 2.8316846592 m³, and 1 m³ = 35.3147 cft to 4 decimal places.

Because the hundred-count is the only convention involved, a brass figure is only as trustworthy as the sentence it arrives in. Record the base unit beside it and the ambiguity disappears.

The area-vs-volume trap, and how the converter closes it

Consider a pattern that plays out on many projects. A subcontractor quotes excavation "₹310 per brass". He means volume — 100 cft. The billing engineer, who mostly sees brass in plaster and paint items, assumes area — 100 sq ft. For a pit of 20 ft × 15 ft × 6 ft the two readings are wildly different numbers: 18 brass of excavation volume, versus a 3-brass footprint (20 × 15 = 300 sq ft). Every measurement-book entry now inherits that ambiguity, and reconciliation drifts for months.

The converter forces the discipline that prevents this: pick the sense explicitly, see the same quantity in brass, sq ft/cft and m²/m³ side by side, and copy the base-unit figure into the MB alongside the brass count. The dimensions take-off makes the arithmetic auditable — whoever checks the entry can re-derive 18 brass from 20 × 15 × 6 ft without trusting anyone's mental math. On the site-to-billing hand-off, that one habit — brass for conversation, base units for the record — removes most of the dispute surface.

Worked: 20 ft × 15 ft × 6 ft excavation in brass, cft and m³

Volume: 20 × 15 × 6 = 1,800 cft → 1,800 / 100 = 18 brass.

At ₹310/brass: 18 × 310 = ₹5,580 for the pit.

Metric record: 1,800 cft × 0.028316846592 = 50.9703 m³ — the figure that belongs in the contract measurement.

Contrast, area sense: a 10 ft × 10 ft plaster patch is 100 sq ft = 1 brass = 9.290304 m². Same word, different quantity — which is precisely why the mode toggle exists.

Field notes (what trips people up)

  • "Per brass" rates are meaningless without the sense. Always write "per brass (100 cft)" or "per brass (100 sq ft)" in quotations and work orders.
  • Plaster measured on both faces. A 100 sq ft wall plastered both sides is 2 brass of plaster, not 1 — check the specification before entering the area.
  • Earthwork bulking. Brass counts in-situ volume; excavated soil bulks 10–30 % in the trolley. Order carriers on loosened volume, pay on measured volume.
  • Concrete rounding. 1 brass of concrete is 2.8316846592 m³ — plants quote in m³, sites often think in brass; keep both on the pour card to avoid short loads.

FAQ

Is brass a legal or IS unit?

No. It is colloquial site shorthand with no definition in any Indian Standard or legal metrology rule. Use it for conversation, but record sq ft/m² or cft/m³ in contracts, BOQs and measurement books.

How many cubic metres is 1 brass of concrete?

100 cft = 2.8316846592 m³ ≈ 2.83 m³. So a 6-brass pour is about 17 m³ — order by m³ from the plant.

Why does my plaster bill say brass when the drawing says m²?

The subcontractor's rate is per brass (100 sq ft) of plaster area. Convert: 1 brass = 9.290304 m², and 1 m² = 10.7639 sq ft. Record both figures in the MB entry so the next reviewer does not have to guess.
